Each year, MEMA invites representatives from its member companies to participate in a legislative summit in Washington, D.C. The summit includes a congressional reception, market segment association board meetings, legislative briefings, and visits to Capitol Hill, during which company representatives have the opportunity to discuss important legislative issues with members of Congress and their respective staffs. The summit concludes with the presentation of MEMA’s industry champion award to a member of Congress who has demonstrated great dedication to the motor vehicle supplier industry over the course of the past year.

More than 150 people attended MEMA’s second annual Ride & Drive event held October 4-5 2007, at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington, D.C.
Twelve participating companies displayed products and conducted driving demonstrations that showed off the latest in advanced safety and energy technology for members of Congress, congressional staff, federal agency officials and the media. The companies included Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, BorgWarner Inc., Delphi Corp., Gates Corp., Gentex Corp., Magna International of America Inc., Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems, PPG Industries, Robert Bosch LLC, SABIC Innovative Plastics, Valeo Inc. and Webasto Product North America Inc.,
“We are very pleased with the turnout and express our thanks to the participating companies,” said Bob McKenna, MEMA president and CEO. “The event gave policymakers in Washington the opportunity to see the great strides suppliers are making in improving vehicle safety and fuel efficiency, and it gave the industry a chance to emphasize legislation that furthers these objectives.”
McKenna noted that MEMA supports targeted tax incentives for the purchase of vehicles with advanced safety technologies to help improve passenger and vehicle safety; a fuel economy standard that is technology neutral and addresses feasibility, cost effectiveness, operational safety, and consumer choice; legislative efforts to make the current R&D tax credit permanent; and strengthening current brand protection and counterfeiting laws.
The next MEMA Ride & Drive is scheduled for fall 2009. Please direct any inquiries regarding participation to Ann McCulloch, director of external affairs, (202) 312-9242 or amcculloch@mema.org.
