Vehicle Safety Regulation

Description:  Motor vehicle safety is at the heart of the automotive and heavy duty supplier industry. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) works to promote effective research, rulemaking, and enforcement initiatives to achieve major safety improvements in the areas of motor vehicle crash avoidance and crashworthiness. There is no doubt that suppliers have played a critical role in advancement of vehicle technologies and will continue to drive initiatives that reduce critical safety problems on America’s roads.

Status:  In the past, MEMA has submitted several formal comments to NHTSA which included rulemakings to address effective braking by trucks, Early Warning Reporting (EWR) requirements for manufacturers, a rewrite of the vehicle lighting standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, light vehicle stability control, and NHTSA’s 5-Year Research and Development plan.

Impact on Industry: Federal motor vehicle safety standards set the stage for the design and use of motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment. These regulatory actions have the potential to affect all sections of the industry.

2008 Anticipated Action: MEMA will continue to work with the market segment associations and the MEMA councils to represent consensus views before NHTSA. In 2008, we expect to work on improvements to the lighting standard (FMVSS 108), New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), heavy vehicle stopping distance and roll stability, back-up alarm systems, and other issues.  MEMA will continue to work with agency staff and keep members informed of regulatory developments affecting the supplier industry.
