supplier issues

State Issues

Description:  Over the last decade, states have become much more active legislative bodies.  This legislation often has a direct impact on the automotive and heavy duty supplier industry.

Status:  In 2007, over ten states considered legislative proposals on extended warranties for on-board diagnostics.  Many states also considered emissions requirements.

Impact on Industry:  State legislatures often have very short sessions and issues can move very quickly.  Motor vehicle parts suppliers should be aware that state activity on certain issues could have as much impact as federal legislation and regulation.

2008 Anticipated Action: MEMA began a new monitoring service of state legislation impacting motor vehicle suppliers.  MEMA will follow state legislation concerning aftermarket parts, emissions, fuels, and climate change, right to repair, and super warranties. The MEMA office will also follow significant state developments relating to health care and tort reform.  The DC staff will report on active legislation on a bi-weekly basis and seek opportunities to represent the industry at the state level.
